Stage 4: Depression

Feeling sad when you realize that you have missed out on having a loving father figure is normal. Sadness is a feeling. Depression is a clinical diagnosis. How can you tell if you are depressed? You feel sad most of the time. Your mood and appetite change. You don’t enjoy the things you usually enjoy doing. You may eat excessively or less frequently. Depression affects everyone differently.

You may have trouble with sleep. Usually if you have trouble falling asleep, that can be a form of anxiety. If you wake up early and are unable to get back to sleep, that can be a symptom of depression.

If you are feeling sad, please acknowledge these feelings. If you have supportive friends, do call on them. Your true friends won’t judge you for being sad. They may encourage you to join in fun group activities with them. You may not feel like doing anything and may need to push yourself a little to go for a walk or go out for lunch with friends. Sometimes you have to act first and you feel better later.

Andrew: I am not a health practitioner; however, for mild symptoms of depression and anxiety, I have found the following supplements to be helpful: SAM-e, DHA (fish oil or flaxseed oil), 5-HTP, Saint-John’s-wort, and magnesium. If you are taking antidepressants, these supplements may interact with them, so please consult with your prescribing physician and seek out a natural health practitioner to help you to choose a combination that is right for you. Essential oils—such as lemon, orange, peppermint, and rose—can also help uplift your mood.

If you feel like crying, cry. Tears can cleanse you and help relieve sadness and tension. If you find yourself sobbing uncontrollably for long periods and you don’t feel lighter afterward, then you could be tipping toward depression.

If your symptoms strongly persist for a period of two weeks or more, then it may be time to seek professional help, which is advisable for depression and anxiety, especially in severe forms of these conditions. Please seek it out if you notice your mood is dangerously low and you are thinking of ending your life. Suicide is a permanent way of trying to fix an often-temporary problem. If you are feeling suicidal or have an urge to harm yourself, please immediately call a suicide hotline for support. A good counselor, crisis hotline, or support group can help you through challenges and restore your happiness.

A woman named Rose was feeling very sad after her last breakup. Each time a relationship ended, she was reminded of the way that her father walked out of her life at a young age. She found that she was spending long periods of time alone and eating a lot of chocolate. Rose stopped returning phone calls. She no longer enjoyed going out with her friends, instead using her time alone to journal.

Rose realized that her choice of music impacted her mood, so she opted to listen to more uplifting music. She also reached out for support online.
